How to choose a ship's clock

Four questions settle it. Mechanical or quartz? The 8-day mechanical (Midi series) is the purist's choice with its weekly wind; quartz (Royal and Fyrkat series, VION, Altitude) is accurate and maintenance-free. With bells? The ship's bell strike marks the watches every half hour: the on-board sound par excellence, best kept out of the bedroom. Which diameter? ø140 mm for cabins, ø155 mm as the universal size, ø180 mm for living rooms and large saloons. Which finish? Polished brass for the classic look, chrome for the contemporary, stainless steel for maximum resistance. If you want the set, every Schatz 1881 clock has its twin barometer. Frequently asked questions about ship's clocks

Mechanical or quartz: which should I choose?

An 8-day mechanical clock, like the Schatz 1881 models, is the absolute classic: wind it once a week, no batteries. A quartz clock is more affordable and needs no ritual — just a battery change every year or two. Our winding guide explains mechanical care.

What diameter do I need?

For a bulkhead or small wall, ø97–140 mm is usual; for the saloon or a large wall, ø150–224 mm. Rule of thumb: the greater the reading distance, the larger the dial.

Can I mount a brass clock outdoors?

Better indoors or in a sheltered spot. For outdoors and salty environments choose the chrome-plated brass or stainless steel versions, which resist corrosion far better. See also caring for marine brass.
