How to choose a ship's bell

Use decides the size: for the front door, the porch or a pleasure boat, 3"–5" (ø75–130 mm) give a clear, pretty note; from 6" the sound gains body and reach, and 8"–12" bells are statement pieces for clubs, restaurants and large gardens. All are polished solid brass, with clapper and braided bell rope, and are mounted on a wall bracket; use brass or stainless steel screws. Does it come with the bell rope?

Why do ship's bells strike every half hour?

Naval tradition divides the watch into half-hour turns: one strike per half hour passed, up to eight. That is how sailors knew how much watch remained without a clock of their own.
