DIETZ makes the world's most legendary hurricane lanterns: the classic American storm lanterns, born in 1840s New York.

Few nautical objects are as recognisable as a DIETZ lantern. The firm founded by R.E. Dietz in New York in 1840 shaped the classic hurricane lantern: the flat-wick storm lantern whose flame defies the wind thanks to its ingenious draft system.

More than 180 years later, the DIETZ lantern remains the reliable companion of decks, porches and terraces: genuinely warm light, no electricity needed, with an industrial-maritime look that never goes out of fashion.

You will find DIETZ lanterns in our oil lamp collection, together with their spare parts: wicks, glasses and burners. And our maintenance guide shows how to keep yours in top shape.

How to choose and use a DIETZ lantern

The hurricane lantern is the outdoor lamp par excellence: terrace, porch, cockpit, the path down to the mooring. Choose the size by the flame height you want and the burn time you need, and the finish by the setting (dark finishes and brass age with character). Use pure lamp oil, fill the reservoir to two thirds and trim the wick before each lighting: that gives a clean flame that does not smoke, even in wind. Replacement wicks and glasses are in spare parts.

How to care for any wick lamp is explained in oil lamp maintenance; if you hesitate between lantern, bulkhead lamp or electric, read the ship's lamps buying guide. A DIETZ lantern is also one of the most appreciated nautical gifts — see the gift guide.
